Unemployment hits the worst off in the nation's capital

States such as Nevada and California receive a lot of attention as they struggle with unemployment rates of 13% and 12.4% respectively, but we hear less about the nation's capital city that is struggling with 12.1% unemployment. Only four states measured an actual decrease in unemployment in December, but in Washington D.C the jobless rose from 11.8% to 12.1%, now over 2% higher than the national average which remained unchanged last month and almost double its neighboring Virginia's 6.6%. In Ward 8 the unemployment rate is said to be as high as 28.5%.

Will The Michigan Turnaround Plan Work?

Figures and statistics measuring unemployment and job creation are being monitored more closely than ever these days, but do they actually hold any weight? In a state like Michigan, where unemployment is said to be as high as 14.6%, many are claiming that as bad as this figure may seem, the truth is even harder to take.

Will gambling revenues save jobs in Kentucky?

Balancing the state budget is a challenge facing legislators all across the nation as money coming in continues to fall and outgoing costs continue to to rise. Kentucky's Governor Steve Beshear has been ridiculed for basing his budget on the expected income from new gambling facilities in the state and both chambers of Kentucky's state government have written off his plan and are working on developing a new budget based on current income.

Job creation means new image for the Sunshine State

It seems there are very few unaffected by the current economic recession as it continues to dominate our daily news and daily lives, however some states do seem to be suffering more than others. The unemployment rate in Florida hovers around 12% according to news reports, but if you were to count those who have dropped out of the workforce and those that are under employed, there may real rate of unemployment closer to 19%!

Politicians point the finger as jobless rate reaches 12% in Florida

It can be very hard to answer people's questions in times of uncertainty, but rival politicians are quick to point the finger and cast blame as Florida's unemployment heads toward 12%. Many individuals and publications are saying that this is the highest rate of unemployment in the state's history, but it is simply the highest recorded rate since unemployment reached 11.9% in 1979. Records were not kept before 1970.

Nevada one of the worst hit states with 13% unemployment

As the unemployed get angrier and more impatient, the arguments become partisan once more. The Democrat and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has been elected four times but the Republicans are more anxious than ever to unseat him, maybe because the current environment in Nevada finally offers them potential to do so. But can a Republican fix all the problems?
