States such as Nevada and California receive a lot of attention as they struggle with unemployment rates of 13% and 12.4% respectively, but we hear less about the nation's capital city that is struggling with 12.1% unemployment. Only four states measured an actual decrease in unemployment in December, but in Washington D.C the jobless rose from 11.8% to 12.1%, now over 2% higher than the national average which remained unchanged last month and almost double its neighboring Virginia's 6.6%. In Ward 8 the unemployment rate is said to be as high as 28.5%. Balancing the state budget is a challenge facing legislators all across the nation as money coming in continues to fall and outgoing costs continue to to rise. It seems there are very few unaffected by the current economic recession as it continues to dominate our daily news and daily lives, however some states do seem to be suffering more than others. The unemployment rate in Florida hovers around 12% according to news reports, but if you were to count those who have dropped out of the workforce and those that are under employed, there may real rate of unemployment closer to 19%!
